Getting my Rockucation on..Bring it!

While we have had Guitar Hero in our home for a couple of years now, I am just starting to get my feet wet. I enjoy watching Sweetie and the boys play. I have been able to blow it off until recently.
Our middleschooler asked me to play with him on Guitar Hero this week. To say that panic gripped me would be an understatement. I wasn't into much other than pinball as a kid, so now the idea of keeping up with those different colored dots as they race toward me is a stressful task at best.
I started my rockucation through the tutorial just last weekend. At various times throughout the week I have taken the time to finish and graduate from the famed rock school of Guitar Hero. I must say that I am by no means ready to Guitar battle.
Today I accomplished the YOU ROCK status on the songs, Rock You like a Hurricane, Slow Ride, Hit me with your best shot, and Rock and Roll all Night. This status means that I actually hit enough notes to be able to put my name in one of four slots on the main page. My rocker character; a gal with purple pigtails and a purple and pink outfit has actually made a little rock money. ha!
While I haven't advanced past the easy stage, Cory did sneak in a battle with me. He took me through an extrememly long, did I mention LONG song called Through the Fire and Flames. Apparently when you are in a battle neither of you can fail out. At the end of such a battle there is a percentage shown and he or she who has the highest score wins. I didn't. I did survive though, mostly by just hitting whatever color flew at me..I was actually proud of the 48% and 19 note streak I got on that one. That is an extremely complicated song.
Well, I must go as the extreme exhaustion of my fingers on my left hand are shaking from excessive use! Peace out!

A visit to the Orthodontist

We have visited our share of doctors lately. We started with a trip to the orthodontist two weeks ago. What promted this visit is our middle schooler's teeth. He could pass for a shark when he opens his mouth.
See, our 6th grader is so afraid of pain, he will not pull baby teeth unless under duress! Therefore, he has two rows of teeth on top and on bottom.
As the momma I'm supposed to pay attention to these things. (anyone who is a parent, or has had custody of a child for any length of time knows that these things sometimes pass our observation if there are no complaints from said child). I mean if the teeth are visible I can see them wiggly. The ones in the back on inside the cheek zone- he might as well not have them as I sure don't think about things I don't see.
( I know, mom of the year will have to go to someone else!)
To sum this up, there are 10 teeth that need to come out."

So, into a cheery office we go. We are greeted warmly by the receptionist. There is a pretty orange paint on the walls, new magazines and a comfy leather couch to sit on. Once signed in, a young doc pops his head out of the side door and asks my 6th grader to come on back. He says he will chat with him first, then call me back.
Okay. I re-sit on the sofa and get immersed in an article on Michelle Obama and how she is settling into the White House. I don't quite make it through and it is now my turn to go back and chat.
Doc has my child open his mouth and show me the same thing that our dentist showed me. "Okay, I'm familiar doc, now what?"
"Please look at this." (doc is pointing to a bottom tooth that moves as my child breaths out!) UGggh! "Is he by any chance afraid of pain?"
He them goes on to explain to me and my child that this tooth and another one are not even root bound anymore. These two teeth can come out today. Free of charge.
Okay, so I focused on the free part. Don't shoot me.
My boy sits there and refuses to let the doc pull his two teeth. More prodding and explaining. Then with tears starting to well up in his eyes he agrees to pull on out right there.
Oh the DRAMA! (Sweetie is SOOOOO going to the next appt)
Eventually it does come out. The sight of his own blood, psychologically gave his tears permission to flow.
Doc is done. We are all done. The person in the waiting room is done too!
Doc says my child can pull the other one out on his own time. He was exhausted. THe middleschooler and I exchanged looks of "Whatever!" between ourselves.
So, Doc won't see him again until all 8 teeth are pulled. I say 8 as once I tell Sweetie that when Doc asked our child to "man up" and pull it or he would pull it for FREE there in the office... and it didn't happen... uggh. It will be only 8 teeth to be pulled.
So Doc tells me that our dentist is the one who will pull these teeth. I schedule an appointment for this to be done after school is out. Our dentist tells me it will take about an hour and a half depending on our child for this to happen.
Sweetie is SO going to this appt. HE can handle the "MAN UP " appt.
I wouldn't be able to take it. I would have to leave the office, the parking lot, quite possibly that side of town. Have the dentist call a cab for the child. Then love on him when he comes home. Like somehow me not being physically there removes me from being responsible. sigh.
It will be me that tells my boy it will be better soon, give hugs, and love, some icecream, maybe pick up some movies.. all the fun stuff.
The bill for this? Don't know yet. Maybe I should ask if he does a two for one special? Sigh.
One person's procrastination sure does have a profound effect on anothers bank account!

Weekend Work

Weekend? What weekend? Wow! This weekend was warm and mostly sunny! Translation?
Outside projects.
To start this off right.. Saturday I promised a family friend that the boys and I would be by to help her get some yardwork done. Man! We got all kinds of stuff done! I got a bunch of plants dug up so that they can be placed somewhere else in her general plan of making it look like a Japanese garden area. Bushes were trimmed, and the boys moved rocks and have started a very nice rock wall! Looking good! Oh, I raked too. I mean I raked, and raked, and then we all raked again. This house has a lot of trees around it, and I am sure that several leaves from surrounding neighborhoods blew in also! WOW! I actually have more raking to do! Anyway, after a portion was finished it sure was satisfying to see the raked flower beds, and the raked driveway! We can see fresh green grass in areas where decaying leaves once lay. Awesome! We unearthed some flowers that were poking their heads up! Yes, we were sore! Ohh! With our tired, achy, sunburned bodies we waved goodbye to our friend and went home and melted! Showers, and a 45 minute nap for me and all was better again. (we had a dinner to attend, so I had to be perky!)
As a family we decided it was time to buy new windows for the house. We have an older home with single pane windows, so the heating bills and air bills are not a pretty sight! Cha-ching! Yes, but we were smart and scouted around and found a great deal! Friday I had the vinyl guys at the house replacing rotting wood and putting up vinyl covering so we don't have to paint! Whoo hoo! Well, and it just all around looks better. I ended up painting anyway as our gutters were all pulled down. Why not? Snatch that opportunity, right?
We found out our columns on the front porch are also rotting. Ick. Anyway, to look at our porch now we have one column to keep it from coming down and some two by fours proping up the other end of the porch. New columns are on the way. Windows & shutters have been measured (we have rotting wood shutters too!), vinyl has been installed. Now we wait for the columns to come in so that the porch is no longer jacked up. You wouldn't believe the attention our house got by neighbors this weekend. Just do a little work.. and here they come! Maybe this will start something and we can improve our streets curb appeal!
Sunday after church, the boys and I painted gutters, mowed the grass and pulled weeds. So, all in all a very productive weekend!
My hope is that this project of ours is finished before 20-23rd of this month. Reason? Our church is putting on a weekend for middleschoolers/highschool kids where they "get away" and experience God. As a host home we are part of that "get away". I'm expecting a house full of sixth grade boys, two teenagers and another set of parents to help us/me out. (I say me as Sweeetheart has to work a 12 hour weekend shift Saturday and Sunday). This means late, late nights and a full house, but most of all, being able to hang out with some awesome kids! I am looking forward to it! There will be devotionals and trips around town, snacks, cookouts, whew! To top it off the kids are involved in a Sunday skit our church puts on monthly called, CrossStreet Live. That will be a FULL weekend!
